What program did Microsoft use to create the Windows OS?

Not possitive, but I would think the core/kernal of Windows is machine code. Applications like notepad, etc, are probably c++. In fact I know a few people that worked on Windows apps built into the OS, but I don't know anyone thats worked on the core.
