How to update my iPhone without losing everything on it?

I have a iPhone 3GS and my iTunes says theres a newer version of the iphone software thats available. If I update it, it will be update to 4.3.3. Well everytime I update my iphone everything on it gets erased and then I have to sync everything on to my

Many people accidentally forget to back up. You are actually suppose to "Back Up" your iPhone before updating. Sync your iPhone and the top of the window where the progress bar is, it'll say "Backing Up" (or something along those lines).
