80GB IPOD CLASSIC QUESTIONS.?

I just got an 80Gb ipod classic.
When i transfer music from i tunes what format does it get downloaded? I find that songs played directly from my hard drive to the pc speakers have more volume & brightness whereas when I feed the ipod through
