Im about to purchase windows 7 professional upgrade from Microsoft's "The Ultimate Steal" for students, but I operating system in called Windows 7 Professional UPGRADE. Does that mean I need a windows system already installed? I only have Linux

If your computer originally had Windows XP or Vista installed, and you still have the sticker on the case with the Product Key etc (your proof of a valid Windows license for that computer), then you are legally entitled to use the Upgrade version on that
