Is it safe to delete the "sleepimage" file in OS X?

I have Mac OS X 10.5 and in the /private/var/vm/ directory, there's a file called "sleepimage." It's a 7 GB file and would free up a lot of space. It looks like this file is used in case the battery dies completely during sleep and it would
It is the Safe Sleep file for your computer and when your computer goes to sleep, the RAM contents are dumped into a file named "sleepimage".
It should be automatically removed when a Mac comes out of sleep, but sometimes this doesn't
